The Irritating Gentleman - Berthold Woltze

1874

why does this communicate the universal mood we women experience so perfectly

Super TW

Not only is she in mourning, and crying, she’s not even old enough to be wearing her hair up. In the Victorian and Edwardian days in western europe, you’d put your hair up once you were a Young Lady. Girls wear their hair down. You KNOW what age a lady is by looking at her hair and clothes. This girl is NOT an adult or even a young adult. She’s a girl. And he’s a predator. No, the artist didn’t paint this while watching this scene, maybe he’d seen something like it too many times and wanted to call out the perverts who do this by making a freaking great oil painting of it to stick in a big gallery so men have to see and and sputter about how They would never do that..It’s a callout.
